Get Thee to the Garden for Exercise!

At our new place, there's a community garden nearby. I signed up for 4 plots with the plan of growing many vegetables and getting some exercise. I also like to be around plants as much as possible since I have a degree in horticulture.

It's been busy with school, but hubby and I finally got over there last night to do some weeding. We cleared away a garbage bag-worth of weeds. It isn't finished yet but we have made a lot of progress. One more session should get it cleared and ready for planting.

My quads are SORE! It feels awesome when I bend down and feel the delicious pull that tells you muscles were worked recently. I should get a great workout this summer.

I love gardening as exercise. You burn off calories and strengthen your muscles. Once the harvest is ready, you have the added benefit of low calorie fruits and vegetables that are packed with vitamins. I plan on growing such delicious foods as quinoa, popcorn, tomatoes and sugar snap peas. I also have several fruit trees and a box full of strawberry plants on my patio.

I also know that gardening can be a great stress reliever, which can affect your weight. It sure does affect me; whenever I am feeling really stressed, I tend to chow down.  I've been working on not doing that, but in the meantime, gardening can help. I especially love the satisfaction of taking my problems out on the marauding weeds that stand in my way.

Someday I would love to have a hobby farm. I'm pretty sure that would keep me in tip top shape. Until that time, I'll enjoy tending my little garden patch, playing exercise video games and doing my races.\

I really wanted to plant a garden this year, but I've already had a bit of a chore just controlling the weeds in the lawn.

That sounds really neat. I too have a place for a garden but not sure when I will start it...probably next year. Looks like I'll be blogging about that too!!! Oh what fun.

We are gardening just a little. We live in military housing, so we're limited to planters, but we planted some strawberries, tomatoes, romaine lettuce, carrots, cucumbers, and basil! It's fun for the kids, too! :)

We're finally getting to this year. We just have a little area to plant in, but I was thrilled to find out that several of the things we wanted to plant can be done right in the ground this time of year. I was sad when we didn't start any indoors a couple of months ago. We were able to get some starts from friends of some of the other vegetables we wanted. It will be interesting to see how these turn out.
It's also interesting to see how many more weeds you get when you plant them in the ground instead of in planters on a second story balcony. That's how we did it before. So, we're definitely getting the weeding exercise in, too.

We have two gardens this year. One at a community garden. That plot is ~50'x80'. We are even doing some seed trials for the University of Idaho there. At home we have a pretty nice sized garden, I'm not sure how big, but it seems big. We have potatoes, onions, garlic, carrots, and two artichokes in the boxes. We also have a bed of strawberries, a raspberry patch, two peach trees, three nectarine trees, and a cherry tree. It should keep me busy while school is out for the summer. :)
