It's a Kids' Fitness Giveaway!

First Lady Michelle Obama recently announced a new program to fight childhood obesity. There are 4 parts according to the Washington Post:

  1. Additional nutrition information
  2. More physical activity
  3. Easier access to healthy foods
  4. Personal responsibility
I've got a giveaway that will help kids achieve objective #2.  CSN Stores is donating a Flybar Foam Master Pogo Stick in yellow & black as well as an Amber Sports Boxing Set.  Together they have a prize value of $65.49.  I picked the pogo stick because I remember how fun it was to hop around on one when I was a kid, and I like the boxing set because you can set it up indoors if needed since it has a stand.

Mandatory Entry: Leave a tip about getting kids to exercise or fun ideas for fitness activities for children. One tip per person, please.

Additional entries (please make a post saying what you did each time):
  • Follow me on Google Connect (+2)
  • Blog about this Giveaway (leave a link) (+5)
  • Tweet about this Giveaway (leave a link)
  • Follow CSN Stores on Twitter (Twitter name)
  • Become a Facebook Fan of CSN Stores
The giveaway will run from Thursday 2/25/2010 until 11:59 PM PST Thursday 3/11/2010. Open to US and Canadian residents 13+.  Please make sure your email is available in your post or in your profile. Good luck!

we do it by going swimming every weekend and taking hikes in the summer.

I get my kids to exercise by making it fun. We take long walks in the park and hunt for leaves. It involves walking almost a mile around the park's winding trails and then bending down all the time to pick up pretty rocks or leaves. Good and FUN way to get in sorely needed exercise!

I find that my toddler boy does everything I do. So, if I'm running, he wants to and etc. We love to hike, swim, clean, play tag, and take walks.

I also take him to the park every summer where he runs around.

In the winter, when we don't want to spend too much time outside, we like to do dancing parties at home with our kids. We'll turn on some fun music and all dance around together. It's amazing what a workout you can get when you're jumping up and down and spinning around.

Get them fun outdoor toys. My nephew used to be a total couch potato, so for his birthday last summer I splurged and got him a really cool bike. He was so proud and wanted to show it off to all his friends he was outside the rest of the summer.

Hi,
I get my kids to excercise by gardening and talking walks after a good rain. On our walks after a rain, we collect worms for our garden. Lots of bending and walking! We plant such a large garden we have to work on it daily. We also are building a rock walkway with rocks we find, more lifting! We also have chickens, so we hunt for the eggs they leave laying around. Its alot of fun to excercise in the garden around our house

Susan Margaret said...

We set fun targets together that surround things the kids like to do ie: play tag for 20 minutes together one day, then the next week we play for 25 minutes. We keep upping the intensity and duration and the kids love it!

To motivate young kids to exercise, a sticker chart marking when they exercise works really well. The important thing is to make the reward at the end of the week something healthy and fun, such as "go to the park with Dad."

My philosophy is that its not optional for kids to exercise. They may have 'free will' but while my son lives in my house, he does what I tell him. He can choose how and when to be active or I can choose for him. Its that simple. Oh yeah, Mrs. Obama, Personal Responsibility needs to be #1 on your list, not #4! What is this country coming to?!?!?

It's always good to have fun with your kids and incorporate fun with exercise and healthiness! Tips to help them is to listen to music while they exercise :) It's also nice to allow them to pick activities to do together (such as bicycle riding, jumping rope, etc.!)

A couple fun ways to help kids exercise is to turn on some loud, upbeat music that they can clean to, do yard work to, do cartwheels outside to, or even to do interpretive dance (ballet, jazz, hip hop, etc.) Another thing is to create a safe obstacle course in the backyard that they have to go through so many times (2/3 times) with certain things they have to do (crawl under, climb over, jump up, turn around, dress up, fall down, walk, run, somersaults, shout, sing, lift, balance, sit-ups, push-ups, stretches, jumping jacks, etc.) It's more fun for kids if there's a reward/prize at the end (1st, 2nd, 3rd...& plus runner ups-who ever completes the race). The more kids playing whether it's siblings or friends in the neighborhood playing together & having some healthy supervised competition definitely make it fun for kids to exercise. Be happy, creative & encourage them to go outdoors for exercise more-cause seriously the vitamin D will do wonders with their entire attitude & improvement of health!
