When I was trying to lose weight before, I started doing some 5k races. I liked them because they gave you a specific deadline to train towards, and you got a great sense of accomplishment when you crossed the finish line.
I did my first one with my best friend. He was willing to do one with me but wasn't sure how well he would like it. We jogged as much as we could and did fast walking for the rest.
He ended up finishing just before me. We both had a time around 48 minutes. We knew we certainly wouldn't be called up for an award that day, but we had finished! As I crossed the finish line, we high-fived, and later we both agreed that we wanted to do more 5ks. We've done about 6 or 7 now, I believe.
It's been too long since I have done one. As part of the Y-Be-Fit program, I made a goal to find an upcoming 5k race and enter.
Yesterday I signed up for the BYU Homecoming 5k run on October 11. That's 5 weeks away. Since it's been so long, I think my goal will just be to finish in under an hour.
I can't wait - I'm doing 5ks again!
